The Right Traits

Transgenic traits, which add herbicide tolerance and insect protection against above ground and below ground pests, can dramatically enhance corn yield potential in ways not previously possible. Many of today’s latest traits are now offered in a single-bag refuge system, also known as refuge in a bag (RIB). RIB systems include the refuge seeds in the bag along with traited seeds, allowing farmers to plant an entire field with just one product.

Different Traits For Common Problems

A corn crop must often overcome challenges to be successful. Fortunately, there are traits that help control many negatives, including devastating corn insects and ongoing drought. Here are a few of the most common challenges faced by corn growers and the traits that can help mitigate them.

Corn rootworm

Corn rootworm (CRW) can cause major yield losses throughout many corn-growing areas. Using newer technologies, such as the SmartStax®  trait, is considered a best management practice to combat this pest.

With two modes of action, the SmartStax®  trait provides long in-season protection, enabling outstanding yield potential in continuous-corn fields. Answer Plot®  data has shown that SmartStax® technology reduces the usual corn-on-corn yield penalty by 5.1 bushels per acre over other CRW technologies.

Additional management considerations for heavy CRW pressure include use of biotechnology traits combined with soil-applied insecticides and crop rotation.

Other corn pests.

Above-ground pests such as corn earworm, European and southwestern corn borers, and fall armyworm cause headaches for farmers across the Corn Belt. VT Double PRO®  RIB Complete®  contains dual modes of action for maximum protection, with a mix of 95 percent insect-protected seed and 5 percent refuge seed in the bag. It’s the only double-stacked trait with dual modes of action against corn earworm.

Drought tolerant.

In many areas of the country, growing a hybrid that is drought tolerant is critical. Technologies such as those found in DroughtGard®  Hybrids combine the best agronomic recommendations, germplasm and a drought-tolerant biotech trait. They are designed to help the plant adapt to drought stress, use available soil moisture efficiently and provide the opportunity to help minimize yield loss from drought.

Multiple Modes Of Action Improve Efficiency

Consider planting hybrids with multiple modes of action, such as the SmartStax® trait, for enhanced yield opportunity.

Reusable Quality Product Packaging

CROPLAN® corn seed is available in convenient, easy-to-use, large capacity bulk containers for our customers. This form of reusable packaging helps ensure product quality and provides efficient seed movement to the field.

Using Corn Insecticide On Traits

Using a corn insecticide can help increase your profitability potential. Answer Plot® research comparing CRW-traited corn treated with Capture® LFR® insecticide vs. untreated achieved a 5.32-bushel-per-acre yield advantage over the last several years. Research was conducted in areas with moderate to high corn rootworm levels, on corn-on-corn acres.
