Following the Peterson Farm Brothers’ CROPLAN® Soybeans from Planting to Harvest

The Peterson Brothers, Greg, Nathan and Kendal, are fifth-generation farmers working the land in central Kansas. Although many might know them from their popular farming content on YouTube and other social media channels, their day-to-day still revolves around raising beef cattle and growing wheat, grain sorghum, corn and soybeans.

One area they are specifically interested in optimizing is their soybean production and ensuring they get their crop off to the strongest start possible. So, they worked with CROPLAN Seed, WinField® United and their local retailer, Agri Trails Co-op, for an on-farm evaluation using CROPLAN soybeans suited to their soil conditions, agronomic needs and yield goals. As part of the evaluation, the Petersons also agreed to document the results in a four-part video series. In it, they share an inside look at the products they’re using to optimize yield potential and what they observe as the season progresses.

“We’re hoping with these videos we can show how the day-to-day decisions can affect the crop months down the road and how making the right choices can help our crop reach its full potential,” said Greg Peterson.

Three videos are already live, and links to each are below, along with a brief description. The remaining video will be filmed at harvest.

Building a Strong Start

The Peterson Farm Brothers are heading to the field to plant their CROPLAN soybeans and explain how early-season decisions can influence crop performance and ROI potential. Their priorities at planting include starting with a clean seedbed, planting into favorable soil conditions and paying close attention to planting depth and population to encourage uniform emergence and stand establishment.

The soybeans were also treated with Ascend® ST3® seed treatment to support germination, root development and early-season vigor. Together, these practices are intended to give their crop a strong foundation and help it reach its yield potential.

Tracking Early-Season Progress

The Petersons are returning to the field to evaluate stand establishment and early soybean growth after heavy rain, wet conditions and high winds. Despite some soil crusting, they observed consistent spacing, strong vigor and healthy root development in the CROPLAN soybeans treated with Ascend ST3 seed treatment, especially compared with a nearby field planted without a seed treatment.

They note they will continue monitoring crop development, weather conditions and emerging threats as they make management decisions throughout the season and evaluate how the CROPLAN soybeans perform under the conditions on their farm.

Monitoring Midseason Performance

As their soybeans move through flowering and early pod set, the third video sees the Peterson Farm Brothers heading back to the field to check crop progress. Following heavy early-season rain and limited July moisture, they evaluate how the crop is responding by checking canopy closure, plant vigor and early pod development.

As the soybeans progress toward pod fill, the Petersons will continue monitoring insects, disease, moisture and other sources of stress that could affect performance. These observations will help them evaluate how the CROPLAN genetics respond throughout the season and carry yield potential into harvest.
